Medicine Hat is tucked away in the southeast corner of the province, built along the banks of the South Saskatchewan River and surrounded by beautiful coulees and rolling hills. The Town of Redcliff, known as the greenhouse capital of the prairies, is nestled near the city to the west. Dunmore, a hamlet in Cypress County, sits just southeast of Medicine Hat’s core.
Each area gives homeowners something different. Perhaps you’re looking for something close to downtown. Maybe you don’t mind a little highway driving as part of your commute. Together, we can find you the perfect fit for your lifestyle.
With a population of approximately 65,000 people, Medicine Hat is a smaller city, but it comes with some big city advantages. The downtown continues to grow, with more restaurants and local shops popping up and expanding. Nearby areas, like the South Hill, feature character homes on tree-lined trees. The northeast and northwest neighbourhoods have some newer developments with larger yards and more privacy. Homes here are also close to the Family Leisure Centre and Costco. Many amenities, like Medicine Hat College, the shopping mall and big-chain stores, are on the south side of town. Parks, schools and off-leash areas are easy to find, no matter where you are.
Community safety is a top priority for the Medicine Hat Police Service. The 2020 Annual Report highlights calls for service, phishing and extortion scams, and features the Regional Property Crimes Unit, which is made up of officers from MHPS, the RCMP and members with ALERT. The report gives us insight as to the types of crimes police officers see in our city and shows where we are compared to other nearby communities, like Taber and Lethbridge.

Medicine Hat really does come alive in the summer and downtown is one of my favourite places to be. There’s a restaurant patio on every block and even a few places the whole family can enjoy. The Yard is a seasonal patio on 3rd Street where everyone is welcome. It’s a place where you can order from a food truck, or pack a picnic. Craft beer is always on tap and the bar staff are happy to help.
The city is also known for its award-winning micro breweries, Hell’s Basement Brewery, Medicine Hat Brewing Co., and Travois Ale Works, as well as being home to a modern distillery, Grit City, who just announced their expansion - Whiskey District.

Ice cream is another summer staple I can’t live without. Swirls Ice Cream is a Medicine Hat original and is something I wait all winter to get my hands on. The little ice cream shop up on Division Avenue always has a line up around the building and you know it’s worth the wait. Camp Ice Cream has quickly become another favourite in my house. There’s always a new flavour of their handcrafted ice cream that I can’t wait to try!
The hustle and bustle of the city isn’t for everyone. Redcliff is just 10 minutes from downtown Medicine Hat. Located just off Highway 1, the town has a variety of homes, many with larger lots than can be found inside town limits. There may not be as many amenities as the city offers, but the short commutes into Medicine Hat make up for it. And if you’re ever in need of a hand, you’ll always be able to count on your neighbours.
Dunmore has a real rural feel. The hamlet is a short drive from the Medicine Hat. Here you’ll find everything from single family homes, to large lots with up to half an acre of land. With large homes and bigger garages comes the option of more toys - there’s certainly enough room to play!
A number of smaller communities make up Cypress County. Agricultural land, farming and acreages are spread out throughout the county lines.
